A 71-year-old man has been charged in connection with a hit-and-run crash that left a woman dead near the Anchorage Jail Saturday evening.

Police identified the suspect driver Sunday morning as Ruti Malietufa. The victim of the collision, at East 3rd Avenue and Orca Street, hasn't yet been named, as police notify her family.

"Malietufa was arrested and remanded at the Anchorage Jail on the felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident with failure to render aid," police wrote.

Further questions to APD overnight Saturday about the collision weren't immediately answered.

Police received an initial report at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday of "a deceased adult female in the road" near East 3rd and Orca, according to an APD statement.

"The preliminary investigation has found that the adult female victim was a pedestrian when a vehicle struck the victim and fled the scene," police wrote.

Officers at the scene said the victim appeared to be an Alaska Native woman, who was struck by a vehicle headed east on East 3rd. There were witnesses in the area at the time of the collision, who heard but did not see it.

The collision had no connection to the jail, officers said.

East 3rd and Orca had reopened by 8:15 p.m., according to APD.

Police said the vehicle involved, sought by investigators and recovered by midnight Sunday, was a yellow 2002 to 2005 Ford Explorer SUV.

"The vehicle has a business logo on the front doors and on the rear window," police wrote. "The vehicle also has a black roof rack without cross bars. The right headlight is inoperative but the parking lamp is still functional. The suspect vehicle should have some front damage to some degree. The last digit of the license plate is the number 4."

Police are asking anyone who saw or has surveillance video of the collision to call APD at 311, or contact Anchorage Crime Stoppers at 907-561-STOP or through its website.
