Anchorage police say they're investigating a death after a body was found in the parking lot of the Alaska Zoo Monday morning.

Officers with the Patrol Division found the body of an adult male lying in the lower parking lot located at 4731 O'Malley Road, police wrote in a statement Monday morning.

APD spokesman MJ Thim said the call came in around 7:45 a.m. He said it's a death investigation and that it's not suspicious at this time. Thim says police are waiting for the medical examiner to determine the cause of death.

Because the Alaska Zoo is such a popular spot, Thim wants the public to be aware there will be a large police presence in the area while officers investigate.

The Alaska Zoo's executive director says it will remain closed while police investigate.

"We are unable to speculate as to what may have happened, but the Alaska Zoo will be closed until further notice while we cooperate with the Anchorage Police Department's investigation. The zoo can confirm that no animals were involved in this incident," said Alaska Zoo executive director Pat Lampi.

Anyone with information about this investigation is asked to call police dispatch at 311 (option #1).
