A man originally deemed missing by Anchorage police is now the subject of a death investigation.

Benjamin A. Knapp, 30, was found Friday morning submerged in about 10 feet of water in Spenard Lake.

On Wednesday, he was reported missing after being seen behind the Lakefront Hotel around 10 p.m.

The Anchorage Airport Police and Fire Department was notified Thursday evening, and began a search of the shore and lake, looking until it was too dark to continue.

The body was not found during that search.

Friday morning, a water rescue team was mobilized and started searching at 10:24 a.m.

Knapp’s body was found in the water at 10:48 a.m. about 50 feet off shore near the Lakefront Hotel. The temperature of the water in the lake was about 43 degrees during the recovery, according to airport police.

The state medical examiner was called to the scene to investigate. Alcohol is believed to be a factor.

Airport police reminds residents to use extreme caution around the water during cold weather.
