The world's largest annual gathering focusing on the Arctic is under way in Iceland, after the 2018 Arctic Circle Assembly began Friday.

Alaska's senior U.S. senator, Lisa Murkowski, addressed the assembly on its opening day. She spoke about providing sustainable energy and healthcare in isolated areas.

She also spoke moderated a panel on energy innovation and adoption featuring several people from Alaska.

Murkowski currently serves as the chairman of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.

Other topics being discussed include extreme weather, melting sea ice, security and arctic tourism.
