A Palmer man faces murder charges in what was initially reported as the accidental shooting of a woman living with him early Saturday.

According to Palmer police, officers responded to the shooting which claimed 23-year-old Crissilin C.O. Cruz’s life, on the 800 block of West Fern Avenue, just before 2:45 a.m.

“Emergency medical services provided emergency medical care to [Cruz], but those efforts were unsuccessful, and Ms. Cruz died at the scene,” police wrote in a statement.

Brian T. Burton, 22, was arrested on one charge of second-degree murder and two counts of weapons misconduct in Cruz’s death.

Palmer Police Chief Lance Ketterling declined to discuss specifics of the shooting, as investigators prepare formal charging documents, but said Burton had shot Cruz with a handgun.

“They were roommates,” Ketterling said.

Police arrested Burton under provisions of the murder statute alleging that he showed “extreme indifference to human life,” according to Ketterling.

Burton was held at the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility without bail, pending his arraignment.
