A Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson paratrooper was severely injured during a drop exercise on base Thursday, according to Army officials.

The accident occurred on JBER’s Malamute Drop Zone, said U.S. Army Alaska spokesman Lt. Col. Martyn Crighton. One soldier with the base’s 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division was involved.

“There was a drop operation today and there was an injury to one of the paratroopers,” Crighton said.

The injured soldier was flown to Providence Alaska Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, Crichton said. A KTVA reporter saw an Army Black Hawk helicopter landing at Providence at about noon Thursday.

An investigation of what led to the accident was still in progress, Crighton said.
