A man died Monday afternoon after falling into waters off Kodiak Island in a boating accident, according to Alaska State Troopers.

The victim was identified Wednesday as 47-year-old Blake Gloria.

Troopers said in an online dispatch Tuesday that word of the victim receiving CPR, about a mile from the Alitak Cannery on the south end of the island, was relayed Monday afternoon by the U.S. Coast Guard.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that an adult male fell into the water after a skiff overturned,” troopers wrote. “Several people attempted lifesaving measures but were unsuccessful.”

Coast Guard spokeswoman Petty Officer 1st Class Charly Hengen said a report of the incident, first came in via VHF radio at about 4 p.m.

“A good Samaritan man did pull the man from the water,” Hengen said. “The report that we received was that he was doing CPR for about 30 minutes.”

A Coast Guard helicopter crew was preparing to launch from Air Station Kodiak, Hengen said, when troopers took over the case and the crew was ordered to stand down.
