Boy, 5, ID'd in accidental shooting
Anchorage Police have identified the 5-year-old boy who was reportedly killed in an accidental shooting Friday night while under the care of a babysitter.
According to APD spokesperson Renee Oistad, Amonzel Binion was the young boy who died.
Just before 10 p.m., officers were called to a home in the 900 block of Chugach Way on reports of a shooting.
Responding officers found the boy inside the home with a gunshot wound.
Detectives determined that two children were being babysat by an adult family member while the parents were at work; when the adult left the kitchen, the 5-year-old opened a kitchen cupboard, found a loaded gun and inadvertently shot himself in the upper body.
No one else was injured.
No charges have been filed.
The December death of another 5-year-old boy in a self-inflicted shooting, Christian Johnson, led to federal charges against his father, Anthony Johnson, for being a felon in possession of the handgun Christian found at their Russian Jack home. Anthony was sentenced in May to 40 months in prison after pleading guilty in that case.
