Troopers name 2 dead in Cantwell Parks Highway crash
Alaska State Troopers have named the two people who died Wednesday in a two-vehicle crash on the Parks Highway near Cantwell.
The dead were identified in an online dispatch Thursday as Tristan Carey and Rachel Weter, both 21, of Fairbanks and Huslia respectively. Word of the collision, initially reported as a vehicle fire near Mile 210 of the Parks, came in at about 11 a.m. Wednesday.
"Investigation determined that a 2013 Toyota Sienna (minivan) crossed the (Parks') center line and collided with a 2014 Peterbilt tractor with double fuel tankers," troopers wrote Thursday. "Both occupants of the Toyota are deceased."
The driver of the Peterbilt was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, troopers said..
There wasn't any word in the dispatch on what led up to the crash.
Troopers spokesman Tim DeSpain said the highway had been blocked by the collision Wednesday, but troopers were able to detour traffic around it in both directions.
