Man badly hurt after being thrown from stolen SUV
A man was severely injured outside Anchorage’s Dimond Center mall on Wednesday, after police say he jumped onto a stolen vehicle – then was thrown from it as its occupants drove away.
Four people, all juveniles, were ultimately taken into custody after the encounter in which Rickie Schmoe was hurt, according to APD spokeswoman Renee Oistad. None of the suspects have been publicly identified due to their age.
The SUV involved – a red 2015 Ford Escape – was reported stolen Tuesday morning from a home on Cindylee Lane, off Lake Otis Parkway. It resurfaced just before 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oistad said, when dispatchers received word that “someone had fallen off a car while it was moving in the parking lot of the Dimond Center.”
Responding officers found Schmoe, who was taken to a local hospital. Staff at Providence Alaska Medical Center reported him in serious condition Thursday afternoon, upgraded from critical Wednesday night.
Surveillance video from the Dimond Center showed Schmoe approaching the Escape and speaking with a passenger through its open right rear window. Amid the exchange, the driver tried to drive away more than once but Schmoe blocked it from doing so.
“Eventually the driver began to drive away and [Schmoe] grabbed onto the side and the roof of the vehicle,” Oistad wrote. “The driver traveled through the parking lot at a high rate of speed when [Schmoe] flew off and landed in the middle of the roadway (near the bus stop on the west side of the mall) with a head injury.”
Oistad wasn’t able to discuss why Schmoe had jumped onto the Ford, due to the pending nature of the charges involved.
“He was not the owner of the vehicle,” Oistad said.
The occupants’ escape was short-lived, however, after someone approached the Escape to check on it at the Kincaid Park chalet on Raspberry Road. All four of the juveniles ran away, but were soon taken into custody by responding officers.
Charges against the four suspects were being forwarded Thursday to the state Division of Juvenile Justice, according to Oistad.
