Ways to celebrate Anchorage's PrideFest this month
PrideFest week is a chance to celebrate Anchorage's LGBT community. This year's theme is the "Next Generation."
"We're really looking at our youth coming up in our community and they're doing a lot of work," said JJ Harrier, an organizer with Anchorage PrideFest. "Last year we looked at the history of pride. This year we look at what's coming up in the future."
There is an event planned for PrideFest every day for the next week, starting Saturday June 9 and continuing through 16. Here's a handful of the highlights:
Beyond the Closet: 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, June 9, at the Out North Gallery located at 333. W. 4th Ave.
"We like to call to call it the LGBT Arctic Entries," Harrier said. "RJ [Johnson] is a speaker. This year we're focusing on the theme... so we're going to showcase partnerships and mentorships it's a lot of fun. [It] usually draws a good crowd."
Drag Brunch: Noon Sunday, June 10, at Mad Myrna's on 530 E. 5th Ave. Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door.
"[This] is a new feature, Mad Myrna's has been rolling our their pride edition," said RJ Johnson, organizers with PrideFest. "You have to get your tickets in advance, so they can make sure they have enough breakfast for everyone. Who doesn't want some eggs benedict and little Tina Turner for breakfast?"

"This is one of our staple events," Harrier said. "Usually draws 400-500 people. They run the 5k or walk it or skip it or whatever you want to do. Afterwards enjoy beer and barbecue."

PrideFest Parade: Next Generation followed by PrideFestival: 11 a.m. Saturday, June 16, in downtown Anchorage.
"This will be our largest parade to date. We have 48 groups signed up, and that's just groups and they're going to be marching in the parade," Harrier said. "That ends up in the park strip for our Pride Festival where we're gonig to have 175 vendors, two stages, "Ginger" from "Ru Paul's Drag Race" will be there working and having fun and celebrating."
