Born and raised in Homer, Alaska, Atz Kilcher is a homesteader, musician and father. He's on the popular Discovery Channel show, "The Last Frontier" and is the father of singer-songwriter, Jewel.

He's releasing his first book, "Son of a Midnight Land," a memoir about growing up with a hard father in a hard land. He is doing a signing of that new book in Anchorage, but first, he joined KTVA's Daybreak to discuss the memoir.

"I didn't have a perfect childhood," said Atz as to what inspired him to create "Son of a Midnight Land." "We had in some sense an idyllic storytelling: parents, animals-- but it was abusive-- it was a meat and taters childhood. You take that and you have to do something with that."

Atz reminisced about other aspects of his childhood, such as the influence of storytelling and music in his life.

As to the tradition of music being carried on his family, he said, "Touring the country with my daughter Jewel and my son... to see my kids out there carrying on a part of that tradition, unbelievable".

He will be signing copies of "Son of a Midnight Land" at Costco on Dimond on Monday, April 23 at 2 p.m., and at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 24, at the Costco on Debarr. You can get more information at
