Fresh off an epic gold-medal victory at the 2018 Winter Olympics, Alaskan skiing legend Kikkan Randall is being recognized by her peers as well as on the podium.

Randall was elected by fellow athletes to the International Olympic Committee’s Athletes’ Commission, according to the U.S. Olympic Committee. Randall and Finnish ice-hockey player Emma Terho were selected in voting that took place in Olympic villages this month, before and during the games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

“Wow, what amazing news to get today,” Randall said in a statement. “I have so much passion and energy to put toward the Olympic Movement and it feels so good to have the athletes put their faith in me. I look forward to representing the athletes and making the Olympic Movement strong in the future. This is going to be a really fun ride.”

According to the USOC, the Athletes’ Commission's goal is "to ensure that the athletes’ viewpoint remains at the heart of Olympic Movement decisions." Members serve on other IOC commissions, with the Athletes' Commission chair also holding a seat at the IOC's executive board.

The U.S. Olympic Committee’s CEO, Scott Blackmun, also praised Randall’s involvement off the field, including her work with youth-activity groups Healthy Futures and Fast and Female.

“Kikkan has always represented Team USA to the highest levels,” Blackmun said. “She’s a selfless and consummate athlete, professional, wife, mother, and advocate, and will no doubt have an extremely positive impact on the IOC Athletes’ Commission.”

Randall helped break a U.S. cross-country medal drought this week with her win in women’s team sprint, giving Jessica Diggins a strong start before Diggins came from behind to beat Sweden’s Stina Nilsson with a time of 15 minutes and 56.47 seconds.

Randall and Terho were among six candidates for two seats opening on the Athletes’ Commission at the end of this month, including Norwegian cross-country skier Astrid Uhrenholdt Jacobsen and Chinese speed-skater Hong Zhang, and Spanish and Italian skeleton luge riders Ander Mirambell and Armin Zoeggeler.

The updated Athletes’ Commission roster, with Randall and Terho, will include:
