Sending Old Glory out in a blaze of glory. Cadets in East High School’s Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) program spent Wednesday afternoon retiring 40 American flags.

The proper way to dispose of worn-out flags is to hold a special ceremony to burn them.

This is the sixth year East High students have participated in the community service project. The eight cadets taking part in the ceremony were specially chosen from the 170 in the JROTC program.

“We are giving these flags the last salute and you often only hear of the military doing that,” said PFC Bryce Griffiths, a senior at East High School. “I still kind of have a hard time comprehending how honorable and respectful that is. Those are two values that hit home for me.”

If you have a flag that needs to be retired you can drop it off at East High School during school hours.
