Anchorage, Mat-Su schools, UAA closed due to freezing rain
Schools and universities across Anchorage are closed for the day Monday, along with most schools in the Mat-Su Borough School District, due to freezing rain and poor road conditions.
ASD announced its district-wide closure shortly after 5 a.m. Monday.
According to ASD spokeswoman Catherine Esary, poor road conditions in Eagle River combined with rising Anchorage temperatures prompted the decision to close -- the district's first weather-based closure this school year.
The University of Alaska Anchorage, Alaska Pacific University and Grace Christian School are also closed Monday.
Mat-Su schools are closed in the Palmer-Wasilla area, with outlying facilities still open for the day.
After 1 to 2 inches of snow fell early Sunday, temperatures quickly warmed above freezing late Sunday night, then to the low 40s overnight. In addition to the warm temperatures, light freezing rain and snow/rain mixed showers are falling across Anchorage, the Mat-Su, Kenai Peninsula and Prince William Sound.
The combination of warm temperatures and precipitation falling is causing some slick road conditions.
Anchorage police warned of poor conditions, which had led to wrecks on the Glenn Highway, just after midnight.
