The Anchorage BDSM community is condemning an alleged assault by Rep. Zach Fansler, one in which a text message exchange posted by the Juneau Empire shows Fansler described the incident as a sexual kink.

According to the Empire, Fansler is accused of assaulting a woman in Juneau, rupturing her eardrum in a drunken attack at a hotel room earlier this month.

"I'm sorry I ventured into my kink BDSM so early with you," Fansler later wrote in a text message to the woman, which Fansler's lawyer says was taken out of context.

The House Speaker and the Alaska Democratic Party have called for his resignation.

Now, so is Sarha Shaubach with the Alaska Center for Alternative Lifestyles, a kink education and event group.

"How dare he, it's not even close to BDSM," Shaubach, who describes Fansler's behavior as "disgusting."

Shaubach says Bondage, Discipline, Sadism, Masochism (BDSM) does not involve physical injury or alcohol.

"BDSM is a consensual power exchange between two adults that ends in people involved having a good time and pleasure," Shaubach said. "You can’t give full consent when you’re intoxicated. BDSM involves pre-negotiation, it involves the cornerstone of what it is that we do, which is consent, communication and negotiation. What happened in that hotel room lacked all of those things."
