Anchorage police are warning people to exercise caution on the Glenn Highway amid a wave of Thursday afternoon snow, as several vehicles have wrecked between the Birchwood exits.

Police spokeswoman Renee Oistad said no injuries were reported in either of the two collisions officers have responded to Thursday afternoon, including a three-vehicle wreck at about 1:15 p.m. about a mile south of the North Birchwood exit.

Police were reporting "whiteout conditions" along the Glenn outbound starting near Bragaw Street, urging motorists to turn on headlights and drive with caution.

“People need to slow way down because of blowing snow,” Oistad said.

Oistad said a second crash, reported just after 2 p.m. outbound near the South Birchwood exit, involved an overturned semi truck and a gray Toyota van.

Eva Bryant, who posted a photo of the semi truck on the Anchorage Scanner Joe Facebook group, said she witnessed the second wreck’s aftermath.

“I saw the driver climb out so I assumed he was OK,” Bryant said.

The semi was uprighted and towed from the scene in the 9 o'clock hour Thursday night.

Police had called tow trucks for the vehicles involved, Oistad said.
