More ski trails are coming to the Mat-Su Valley.

On Friday the Mat-Su Ski Club celebrated the completion of 3.7 new miles of trails at the Government Peak Recreation Area.

Ski club vice president Hans Hill said the $275,000 project is part of Phase 2 to add more outdoor opportunities for people living in the Valley.

The Mat-Su Borough hopes the improvements will attract more races at the area, which could also be used as a backup for bigger competitions like 2018 National Cross Country Ski Championships held at Kincaid Park in Anchorage in early-January.

Hill said he grew up skiing courses around the local high schools because the Mat-Su was lacking advanced accommodations.

“We have a growing community of skier, we have a very active group as well and we wanted to create as many opportunities as possible,” Hill said.

The next phase of the project will include more infrastructure improvements like a waxing area and amphitheater for concerts.
