Klawock police say foul play suspected in woman’s death
A woman’s death Sunday after she was medevaced from the Southeast Alaska village of Klawock earlier this month is under investigation by local police.
Police and medics responded to a Klawock home Jan. 4 after reports of “an unresponsive adult female” identified as 37-year-old Francile Ella Turpin, according to a statement from Klawock Police Chief Terry Stonecipher.
Turpin was initially treated at the local Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium clinic but was subsequently flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
“On Jan. 14, 2018, [Turpin] passed away at the Harborview Medical Center with immediate family present,” Stonecipher wrote. “Due to circumstances surrounding her death, the case is under investigation.”
Stonecipher said in an email that “foul play is suspected” in Turpin’s death, but he was unable to release further details on the case Wednesday pending the return of autopsy results.
Police in the nearby town of Craig, also on Prince of Wales Island, said they were assisting with the Klawock investigation.
