An explosive ordnance team from Eielson Air Force Base responded Tuesday afternoon after a civilian reported finding a possible mortar round off the Richardson Highway.

Just after 3 p.m. Tuesday, Alaska State Troopers were notified of the possible mortar round near milepost 352 of the Richardson Highway in North Pole. That's just about three miles northwest of North Pole's city center.

A 28-year-old Fairbanks man reported finding what he believed to be a 61mm mortar round.

Troopers shut down the Richardson Highway and diverted traffic onto Badger Road. The roadway was reopened around 5:30.

Eielson EOD was called to the scene and worked with troopers on the removal of the device.

It was later determined the device was not explosive at all, but rather it was a driveline from a vehicle. The EOD team used a robot to examine the device and make the determination.
