1 hurt after mobile drill hits Palmer gas line, burns
A Palmer fire involving a mobile drill rig left one person injured Friday morning and temporarily shut down the Old Glenn Highway, according to Mat-Su Borough officials.
Otto Feather, the borough’s director of emergency services, said reports of the fire on the Old Glenn near Robin Lane first came in just before 10:30 a.m.
“Our understanding is that there was a drill rig that was doing some work and they struck a (natural) gas line,” Feather said.
A Butte Fire Department ambulance responded for the injured person, Feather said. Responding crews shut down both lanes of the Old Glenn, as staff from natural gas utility Enstar arrived to secure the gas line before firefighters could extinguish the rig.
Firefighters at the scene said the gas line was secured and the Old Glenn was reopened by 1 p.m. Friday.
The rig involved belonged to Discovery Drilling.
