A young boy fatally shot himself with a gun he found at his Russian Jack home early Tuesday, Anchorage police said.

Officers responded to the death of 5-year-old Christian Johnson on the 5700 block of Rocky Mountain Court at about 12:30 a.m., according to spokesman MJ Thim.

The preliminary investigation found the child died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” Thim wrote. “The child found the gun inside the drawer of a bedroom nightstand.”

Thim said Johnson was found dead at the scene. The weapon with which he shot himself belonged to his parents.

“We’re still investigating who owned the gun, the mom or the dad,” Thim said. “The mom was in the kitchen, the father was in another room; the mom heard the gunshot, walked into the room, saw what happened and called us.”

Police will be referring the case to Anchorage District Attorney Richard Allen’s office for possible charges, Thim said. He deferred to prosecutors on what charges may be possible in the shooting.

Allen said he had found out about the shooting from the initial police alert, and didn't yet have it in hand for review.

“This is a tragic reminder about gun safety and children,” Thim wrote. “Don’t leave guns unattended and easily accessible, use a gun lock or secure guns in a safe.”
