Alaska Communications will lay off 30 workers, or about 5 percent of its workforce.

External Affairs Director Heather Cavanaugh says the cuts were unexpected but necessary after funding shortfalls from the state and federal governments.

Cavanaugh said the company would go through a “voluntary separation package” program before laying off additional workers.

“It’s always a sad day when we have to let go of good people,” Cavanaugh said. “We certainly don’t want to let go of any people, at the same time, it’s in the best interest in the long-term health of our company.”

Cavanaugh wouldn’t say how much money the company is expected to save with the layoffs.
