A skier swept away by an avalanche in the Hatcher Pass area died Wednesday afternoon, according to Alaska State Troopers.

The slide happened on the President's Ridge area of Marmot Mountain -- approximately 3,700 feet on a southerly aspect, according to the Alaska Avalanche Information Center.

Word of the slide, reached troopers just after 2:30 p.m., troopers spokesman Tim DeSpain said. Three skiers had been in the area at the time.

“They were wearing beacons and they were able to find (the skier) using the beacons, but at the time CPR was unsuccessful,” DeSpain said.

The circumstances of the slide weren’t immediately clear, DeSpain said, and the identity of the deceased was pending next-of-kin notifications.

Troopers and several rescue agencies responded to the scene and were still there Wednesday afternoon.
