Some seniors who live on the Kenai Peninsula will be getting home-delivered meals in style now that two senior programs there have won brand new Subarus.

Representatives from the Kenai Senior Center and the group Homer Citizens Inc. picked up the keys on Friday at Continental Subaru.

The cars were among 50 that were given away to organizations that deliver Meals on Wheels in a nationwide contest by Subaru of America. The company is celebrating its fiftieth year in business.

Kathy Romain from the Kenai Senior Center said she wrote about a veteran who lives in Kasilof in her application.

"I told the story of a gentleman who's lived out there, he helped homestead that area. Getting down to his place was so icy that a neighbor would pick up the Meals on Wheels driver on her four-wheeler so he could deliver the meal," said Romain. "I think they liked that story."

Both organizations said they'll appreciate the four-wheel drive to deliver meals, especially in the winter.
