Troopers: Man's death after Parks Highway wreck an apparent suicide
A Healy man found dead Monday morning after a single-vehicle wreck on the Parks Highway appears to have taken his own life, according to Alaska State Troopers.
An online dispatch regarding the death of 48-year-old Christopher Stancil said troopers were informed just after 10:30 a.m. Monday that “a vehicle with a man believed to be deceased inside” had been found at Mile 59.5 of the highway.
“Troopers responded to the scene and found a red 2000 Dodge Dakota pickup which had driven off the roadway, down a steep embankment and ran into a tree,” troopers wrote. “[Stancil] was found to have what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A firearm was found with him in the vehicle.”
Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said foul play isn’t suspected in Stancil’s shooting, although it’s not yet clear whether he shot himself before or after the truck crashed.
Stancil’s next of kin have been notified, and the state medical examiner’s office in Anchorage will perform an autopsy on his body.
