Wisconsin-based apparel firm Duluth Trading Company will open its first Anchorage store in 2018, in a big-box building that has sat vacant for the past year.

Duluth spokeswoman Holly Dugan confirmed early Friday that the company, known for its practical outerwear designs and irreverent advertising, will move into the Sports Authority building on the Old Seward Highway just east of the Dimond Center mall. The building has been empty since Sports Authority liquidated all of its stores nationwide in 2016.

“They will be moving into the old Sports Authority, however they will not occupy the entire spot,” Dugan wrote in an email.

It was too early to say how many staff the new location would employ, Dugan said.

Duluth Trading Co. currently has 26 stores across the U.S., according to its website, as well as an extensive online sales presence.
