Two people were injured Thursday morning in a car that crashed and rolled down an embankment near the bridge to Government Hill, according to Anchorage police.

Police spokeswoman Renee Oistad said the wreck, reported at about 9:15 a.m., involved a car that was traveling from Government Hill, headed south along the A-C couplet bridge toward its link with C Street.

“Instead of making the curve, they continued to go straight,” Oistad said. “They hit an unoccupied construction vehicle; that caused them to go over the couplet.”

At that point, Oistad said, the car hit an embankment and rolled several times before coming to rest below the southbound section of the bridge. Two people – a woman at the wheel and a man who was a passenger – were inside.

“The male was able to crawl out of the vehicle,” Oistad said. “The female had to be cut out.”

Both were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Speed was an apparent factor in the crash, Oistad said.
