Alaska State Troopers say a crash on the Richardson Highway near North Pole Thursday night claimed the lives of two people.

The collision near Mile 353 drew a trooper response at about 6:30 p.m., according to an online dispatch. Initial reports of the crash said a 2015 Kia Rio was headed east on the highway when a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta crossed the divided highway from its south side to its north side.

“A male driver was driving the 2015 Kia when he collided into the driver’s side door of the 2000 Volkswagen Jetta driven by a male driver,” troopers wrote. “The collision killed both drivers.”

Neither driver was identified in the dispatch, pending notification of their next of kin.

Traffic was able to move past the crash by 8 p.m., although one lane of the highway remained blocked in each direction as troopers investigated.
