A 34-year-old Palmer man died Monday night, Alaska State Troopers said, after his motorcycle crossed the center line of a local road and slammed into a sport-utility vehicle.

Word of the collision at Wolverine Road and Dewachen Circle that killed Caleb Bennett first reached troopers just before 7 p.m., according to an online dispatch. Initial 911 callers reported that good Samaritans were conducting CPR on him.

“Investigation revealed [Bennett] was driving his 1999 Suzuki motorcycle west on Wolverine Road,” troopers wrote. “The motorcycle failed to negotiate a right curve in the road and crossed into the oncoming lane. The motorcycle struck a 2013 Ford Escape driven by Heidi Stelzer, age 53 of Palmer.”

Troopers said Bennett, who wasn’t wearing a helmet, was declared dead at the scene. His next of kin were notified, and the state medical examiner’s office is planning to conduct an autopsy on his body.

Speed was a factor in the crash according to troopers, who are asking anyone who saw the collision to call them at 907-352-5401.
