A young girl died Wednesday in Togiak, Alaska State Troopers said, after being accidentally shot by another child.

A village public safety officer and a trooper responded just after 5 p.m. Wednesday to the shooting in Togiak, a community of about 900 people nearly 70 miles west of Dillingham, according to an online dispatch.

“Investigation revealed the 6-year-old was shot unintentionally by a 10-year-old while playing with an unsecured and loaded .22-caliber firearm,” troopers wrote. “Next of kin was present.”

First responders and health aides performed lifesaving measures on the shot child, who was taken to the Togiak clinic and declared dead.

No foul play is suspected in the girl's death, troopers said.

AST says the children involved are related.

The State Medical Examiner’s Office has requested the body for an autopsy.
