Mariachi Agave Azul began with a group of friends three years ago trying to get in touch with their Mexican heritage. Since then they’ve grown and are the only active mariachi band in Anchorage. They’ve been featured in an online article on Atlantic magazine’s website. The group has also played for comedian George Lopez.

In light of Mexican Independence Day, Mariachi Agave Azul performed live for a Tuesday edition of Mic Check in the Morning.

“Sometimes we play at restaurants,” said band member Francisco Badillo. “But mostly we play at private events, birthdays, anniversaries and farewell parties.”

The band believes it’s important to perform today, especially to pay tribute to Mexican culture.

“It’s such a pleasure just representing from farther reaches out of Mexico all the way up here in Alaska,” said band member Javier Acuña.

It takes a lot of rehearsal time for the band to practice and come up with new music. They practice twice a week for two hours.

Mariachi Agave Azul is a non-exclusive group. Not all the members are Mexican-American. Atlantic magazine said the band shows Alaska’s “surprising racial diversity.”
