Web Extra: Kenai Fish Wars
On August 26, the Alaska Supreme Court will hold a hearing on an initiative that would ban setnetting in Cook Inlet. It’s the latest chapter in a decades-old war between the Kenai River sports fishing industry and Cook Inlet setnet fishermen.
The initiative, which is being pushed by the sports fishing industry, has constitutional implications, which could potentially affect other fisheries around the state in the future.
This week on Frontiers we focus on the Kenai Fish Wars – the economic, political and scientific issues that are a part of a swirling debate.
Our guest is Andrew Jensen, editor of the Alaska Journal of Commerce, who has followed this long-running battle between the setnetters and the sports fishing industry.
In this Web Extra, Jensen sheds light on some of the state constitutional questions the initiative raises, as well as the history of past attempts to put a similar measure on the ballot.
