In Seward, it was rainy the day before the Mount Marathon race, but there’s another weather condition that’s worrying many competitors.

At the peak of the mountain, 3,022 feet above Seward, there’s a large snow field. Racers say they haven’t seen these conditions in at least 5 years.

A lot of people were practicing the route Sunday and even some experienced racers told KTVA it was scary.

“A lot of the guys love it. If you can save minute or two, they do it,” one runner told KTVA. “I don’t know saving that much time isn’t that critical to me. I’d rather get down be safe.”

KTVA will have complete LIVE coverage of the men’s and women’s Mount Marathon races on Monday, July 4 beginning at 10:30 a.m. Watch the coverage on KTVA 11, GCI Channel 1 and streaming online at KTVA.com/stream
