ANCHORAGE – Iditarod veteran DeeDee Jonrowe — who holds the fastest time ever recorded for a woman — dropped out of the Last Great Race at the Rohn checkpoint Tuesday morning.

According to a statement from race officials, Jonrowe said she had been “beat up physically in the Dalzell Gorge” when she scratched at 6 a.m. with a team of 16 dogs. Race veteran Linwood Fiedler, who followed suit and scratched at 6:21 a.m. with 15 dogs, also cited physical injury from driving through the Dalzell Gorge.
