Gold Nugget receives ‘late entries’ to triathlon
Sunday’s Gold Nugget Triathlon was sold out of slots, but in the afternoon during the running portion, three late entrants joined the race. The moment gave race videographer Dr. George Stransky more than runners trying to set personal best times.
It gave him three bears.
As the ladies worked their way to the finish line, two black bear cubs shot across the path in Anchorage. While that may be harmless enough, their mother was also nearby, which can pose a great danger to the runners.
“Alaskan women are not too concerned about a mother bear and two cubs on the course,” Stransky laughed. “They just dealt with it and continued their race.”
Thankfully, everyone remained calm as the cubs approached the ladies, then harmlessly wandered off. So did their mother. Stransky was driving and used his vehicle to ease and separate the bears and the runners.
