Anchorage man almost breaks pumpkin state record
An Anchorage giant pumpkin grower attempted to set a new state record Tuesday.
Local grower Dale Marshall brought three massive pumpkins to the Alaska State Fair. The first two weighed in at around 730 and 750 pounds, but he thought the third would top 1,300 pounds, handily beating the record of 1,286 pounds.
When the massive pumpkin made it on the scale, it clocked in at 1,283 pounds, missing the record by only four pounds.
Everyone, even the contest officials, were disappointed.
“Keep on going! I just wanted it to go up a little higher, four pounds, you know. Forty pounds would be something different, but that’s just so close,” said pumpkin weigh-off coordinator Kathy Liska.
Dale says there’s always next year. He’s going to keep his eye on that state record prize.
