McMurren also adds that Alaska and Delta are getting a little less cooperative with their mileage plans.

“Basically if you’re traveling on Delta and you want to earn Alaska Airline miles, you’ll only get 25 to 75 percent of the actual flight miles,” he said. “That, of course, is in keeping with the new cruelty of Delta’s revenue-based loyalty program.”

McMurren reminds shoppers to double-check the fine print before making a purchase.

“For what it’s worth, several of Alaska’s other partners, including British Airways and Emirates, award only a small portion of the actual flight miles when you’re traveling in coach,” he continued. “Remember: the big print giveth and the fine print taketh away.”
