It was a dark and stormy morning in the Matanuska and Susitna Valleys on Monday, as thousands of customers were without power and high winds continued.

The Matanuska Electric Association’s online outage map showed that 6,305 customers were without power just before 8:30 a.m. Monday. The majority of those affected are in Wasilla.

Julie Estey, director of public relations for MEA, said the company has been dealing with outages since Friday, all of which are wind-related.

At 8:30 a.m. Monday, 12 crews were working to restore power, Estey said, and getting the power back on depends on the extent of damage to the power lines.

Just after 10 a.m., there were 3,867 customers still experiencing a loss of power. By 5:30 p.m., only 1,224 customers were without power.

She said the outages were not caused by or connected to the Moose Creek Fire, rather the wind that fire crews are also battling as the work week begins.
