A woman was killed and a man was injured in a house fire on South Knik River Road Sunday, according to Alaska State Troopers.
Troopers and the Mat-Su Fire Department were called to the home at 12:54 p.m. for a report of a residence fully engulfed in flames, with one woman still inside, AST said.
“Investigation revealed that two people were sleeping inside of the residence when one awoke to the residence fully engulfed with fire. The man attempted to get the adult female out of the residence but was unable to,” troopers wrote. “The man ran down the roadway and flagged a car down who called 911.”
When the man, later identified as 55-year-old Charles Wocell, returned to the home, he went back inside to try and rescue the woman. Troopers said he was injured and taken to the Mat-Su Regional Medical Center.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze and found the woman.
Her remains were taken to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy and positive identification.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.
