Some colorful creatures are taking over downtown Anchorage and other locations. The first wave of statues in the Parade of Bears project has been installed, and more bears are scheduled to be put on display in the next few weeks.

Local businesses sponsored each bear for around $1,750, to benefit the International Conference on Bear Research and Management. Local artists were commissioned to paint the once-white bears after they arrived in Anchorage in late June.

Some of the bears are outside and can be easily seen by pedestrians and drivers alike, while others will take a little more searching to find. The Visit Alaska information center, located at the corner of Fourth Avenue and E Street, has maps of the bears’ downtown locations available to the public.

One bear is expected to be placed at the Alaska Zoo, while another has already been spotted at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. The Alaska Botanical Gardens is also going to host a bear, according to Visit Anchorage.
