Funny River firefighters got several four-legged, furry surprises earlier this week.

According to the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, five wolf pups were rescued from an abandoned den Tuesday. The disturbance caused by the massive wildfire had caused the parents to abandon the litter, refuge personnel said, and medics working along the fire line removed porcupine quills from the pups and fed them water and glucose.

Personnel from the refuge and the Department of Fish and Game helped remove the pups from the fire line, according to the refuge, and they were taken to Anchorage for holding prior to finding permanent homes elsewhere.

Both the Gannett Glacier firefighters and Division X-ray medics were instrumental in the pups’ rescue, refuge personnel said.
