There was more trouble with bears near Goose Lake Park Tuesday as police fired non-lethal rounds at a mother to shoo her and her cubs.

Officers fired sponge rounds to encourage the bears to leave, police said. The mama black bear, her cubs and another unrelated yearling have been spotted hanging around Goose Lake, the University of Alaska Anchorage campus, Alaska Pacific University and the Chester Creek area this summer.

Goose Lake has been particularly problematic because of trash people leave behind, said Jessy Coltrane with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. The bears haven’t shown any signs of aggression despite people approaching them to take pictures and “selfies,” she added.

Wednesday, Parks and Recreation will remove all the trash cans and replace them with bear-proof bins. If the situation doesn’t change, the bears could be put down, Fish and Game said.
