The Polar Bear Project will unfold in two phases
ANCHORAGE – A multimillion-dollar expansion project at the Alaska Zoo includes new viewing areas and upgraded polar bear habitats.
The Polar Bear Project is set to unfold in two phases. Capital campaign manager Eileen Floyd said the first phase is a standalone project costing $1.87 million; a polar bear transition center with holding dens for up to six cubs. The zoo has so far raised $1.4 million for the project, Floyd said, and is preparing to break ground this summer.
The second phase of the project would replace the concrete enclosure with upgraded terrain, including more realistic yard material.
“We’re really looking forward to being able to give our bears that,” Floyd said.
