World Cup loss disappoints Anchorage fans

ANCHORAGE –

They gave it all they had, but Team USA’s run for the World Cup is over.

America fell to Belgium 2-1 after the game went into extra time.

It’s a disappointment to fans who certainly believed a victory was possible.

They made up every excuse in the book to skip out on work and watch the showdown.

“Wherever I was going to be … I’m watching this game,” said Russell Mark as he cheered on his team at the Peanut Gallery Tuesday.

Hundreds cheered on the USA underdogs at other Anchorage locations, and the soccer mania seemed to be spreading. Across town at Crossbar, even more fans gathered.

The last time the stars and stripes won a round 16 match was 2002, and that put Anchorage fans on edge.

“It’s getting nerve-wracking,” said super fan Robb Milner, who was decked out in a skin-tight red, white and blue suit.

Miler had money on the game that was a roller coaster ride of emotions.

While there were shouts of joy, in the end, there was also shared disappointment.

“A very good run. Absolutely. Four years from now I’ll break the suit back out and we’ll try it again,” Milner said.

This is not the year for Team USA, but there’s always 2018.
