The first weekend of the February is here and so is another storm system. It is coming out of the Gulf of Alaska and will continue to move into Southcentral throughout today.
The plan for this storm is that winds will be pretty quiet here in Southcentral, but heavy snow in the Anchorage area along with the Prince William Sound will be the big issue. A winter weather advisory have been put into place throughout today where 5-12 inches of accumulation can be expected in town and higher amounts for higher elevations.
The Matanuska Valley won't be left out, with 5-10 inches along with advisories along the Copper River Basin area. Thompson Pass into the Northeastern Prince William Sound will get 6-12 with possible rain mixing in at times. Whittier will get hit with winds up to 65 mph along with 1 to 2 feet along with the Western Prince William Sound. The big issue will be reduced visibility, so if you don't have to be out please don't.
Southeast is dealing with a very tight pressure gradient, causing winds to be an issue until mid-evening. Gusts to 70 mph will touch down in the Capital City today, already causing flights to be canceled. Along with rain and snow we'll continue with 2 inches for tonight and another two for the morning.
Systems continue to form in the Bering extending to the Northwest. This will start to break down that high pressure tomorrow allowing mild air to filter in. This storm will start to allow more reasonable temperatures to take over the Southwest and Western coastal communities. I know you want to say it: "At last!"
This storm will move out of the region after midnight, allowing high pressure to move back in. As that high pressure moves in, temperatures will move back down to the 20s range with sunshine. It will feel a little bit cooler until Monday. That storm that is brewing in the Southwest will shift over, giving us a rain and snow mix with highs in the lower 30s.
Be extremely safe today, as the roads are very dangerous. Have a great weekend Alaska!
