Large low pressure is crossing into the Eastern Aleutians and Southwest today causing Winter Weather Advisory across the board. Precipitation will increase as this low continues Northward with into the Southcentral coastal areas today.
This includes Western Kenai, Seward and the Northeastern Prince William Sound. As it continues north it will bring a tight pressure gradient causing winds to pick along Turnagain Arm and Portage Valley.
Right now radar images are showing there downsloping winds are taking place over Kenai and the Anchorage area. Currently blizzard warnings are now in effect until 4pm this afternoon through Portage Valley and Turnagain Arm. Accumulation of 4-10 inches with wind gust picking up to 60 mph. Light flurries will move into the Anchorage area tonight, with higher amounts of snow hitting Upper Hillside. Associated with this system is still mild air along with precipitation that could be heavy at times falling as rain and snow.
The southeasterly flow of this storm will keep Anchorage fairly dry, however portions of the Matsu could see blowing snow along with scattered snow. Will continue on the stretch of temperatures in the 30's as we head into late week. A little more cloud coverage will continue throughout tomorrow, along with mostly cloudy conditions will persist as we head into the weekend.
The mild February has been fantastic after a bitter month of January. As we head into the last couple weeks of the month it almost has some thinking are we seeing spring early?? Remember the first day of spring isn't until March 20th so by then we are hoping temperatures remain on the mild side.
Be safe, enjoy the weather, and don't forget to smile Alaska!
