So why might we see flooding this weekend? In January?!?! In Alaska?!?! Well it's a combination of things. The first being extremely warm and moist air heading into south central Alaska this weekend. This moisture is streaming all the way up from the tropics. In the Anchorage Bowl we could see up to 1.5'' of rain Sunday. Areas of the Prince William Sound could see up to 6'' of rain Sunday. So obviously a lot of moisture heading our way. It's not totally unheard of to see rain totals like this in south central. What will make it potentially dangerous is the fact that the ground is still frozen. The ground will be unable to absorb the moisture coming into the region. That will mean a lot of ponding on roads. Rivers and streams could potentially rise quickly as all the water will run to those areas since it won't go into the ground. So if you live near a river, stream, or in a low lying area keep an eye on the water levels. Everyone be careful this weekend.
