A Low pressure system sits over the Aleutian Peninsula bringing widespread mixed snow and rain for all of South Alaska. Strong winds will blow just north of Seward Peninsula and over Kodiak Island. This Low will be merging with another Low pressure system tracking toward Bristol Bay culminating in showers for the southern areas tomorrow with winds continuing for the Northwestern section of Alaska and increased winds for South Central Alaska. On Monday the combined Lows will die out and yet another Low pressure system tracks toward the Southeast and will deposit snow and rain showers in the Southeast and South Central regions. Winds will be present along the Aleutian Peninsula due to the impending Low tracking along the area.
On Saturday night, Anchorage will have mostly cloudy skies and isolated snow showers over the mountains. By Sunday morning there will be snow showers and cloudy skies changing to a rain/snow mix by the afternoon. On Sunday evening winds will increase along the Turnagain Arm and higher elevations and will continue to blow into Monday. On Monday, cloud cover will decrease, however snow showers will continue for the Anchorage Bowl. High temperatures will remain in the mid-30s temperature until Valentine’s Day on Tuesday. On Tuesday, a day that celebrates your special love, clouds will decrease and temperatures will drop slightly into the high-20s range. Opportunity knocks! These are perfect conditions to take your sweetheart out for a walk with some yaktraxs. The remainder of the week will have beautiful partly sunny skies with high temperatures remaining around the high-20s. Temperatures will be decreasing gradually and will be dip into the high-10s by the weekend.
Tomorrow’s forecast has Alaska’s most significant weather over the south. Rain and snow mixed showers will prevail over Juneau. Low temperatures will drop to a warm 32 degrees! The North Slope has moderate weather with a few snow flakes and partly sunny skies for Fairbanks. Low temperatures are relatively warmer with -5 degrees for Prudhoe Bay and 11 degrees for Fairbanks. Partly sunny skies will exist over Nome; Bethel with cloudy snow showers in the morning. The Southwest will have cloudy conditions and showers. Unalaska will have mixed showers with winds and Kodiak will experience mixed showers in the afternoon with winds. Mixed showers seem to be the prevailing theme along the Kenai Peninsula with Blizzard Watches for Portage Valley and Turnagain Arm. Up in the Matsu Valley, snow will be falling with 20-mph winds. Valdez will start Sunday with mixed showers transitioning to a Blizzard Watch for the evening through Monday afternoon.
Enjoy our statewide relatively warmer temperatures while they last. Overall temperatures within the state are moderate now compared to last month’s cold snap. Watch out for icy roads as snow melts and freezes during the evening. Personally, I almost fell on ice in the parking lot last night. Valentine’s Day is just around the corner so plan on doing something special for your sweetheart!
