Cloudy But Warm

Expect snow and rain showers this weekend for the south that continue over Washington’s Birthday in the Gulf Coastal regions.

Expect snow and rain showers this weekend for the south that continue over Washington’s Birthday in the Gulf Coastal regions. Currently, there is a Low pressure system west of Alaska forming a tight pressure gradient over the Seward Peninsula which creates winds in the area. Snow/rain showers occur over the Southeast, Southwest, and along Prince William Sound. Tomorrow this Low will fizzle out and a new Low will push towards the Southeast causing showers all along the Gulf Coast and Southwest. From this Low expect winds to pick up in the Southeast and Southwest. By Washington’s Birthday, this Low will die out and yet another Low will track over the Gulf and settle right over South Central Alaska creating another day of showers for the Alaska Gulf Coast and Southwest. On Monday, hold on to your parka’s hood because residents of Seward Peninsula will get winds. Winds will also continue over the Southeast.

Alaska’s forecast for Sunday has strong weather over the southern regions of the state due to the Low that tracks toward the Southeast. Snow and rain will prevail over the Southeast. The North Slope will have mostly sunny to partly sunny skies with some patchy fog for Prudhoe Bay. Snow showers will occur for Nome in the afternoon and Bethel will have isolated snow showers in the morning. Rain and snow will fall over the Southwest. Winds will blow over Unalaska and expect one-inch of accumulated snowfall tomorrow. Kodiak will not get these showers until afternoon. The Southwest will experience the warmest low temperatures in the state ranging into the 30s. For the Kenai Peninsula, isolated snow showers to the west and scattered snow showers to the east will prevail. Isolated snow showers will occur throughout the Matsu Valley. Prince William Sound area will experience scattered snow showers.

Tonight, mostly cloudy skies with 10 percent moon illumination occuring over the Anchorage Bowl with low temperatures ranging from 15 to 25 degrees. After midnight, expect some isolated snow showers lasting into the early morning with high temperatures ranging from 28 to 36 degrees. Monday will have increased cloud cover and snow showers by afternoon lasting into early Tuesday morning with mostly cloudy skies. Isolated showers occur on Wednesday with decreasing clouds by Thursday afternoon and mostly sunny skies by Friday. Enjoy Friday’s weather because another Low will reach into the Gulf tracking towards South Central bringing cloudy skies and isolated snow showers along the mountains over the Anchorage Bowl by Saturday.

It’s going to be a soggy weekend. But the good news is temperatures will remain moderate compared to our January cold snap. Enjoy the warm temperatures this week and have a great weekend!
